I’m assuming the artist here took the final movie and just motion-smoothed it - I’d be curious to see how this might work if they could access the original matte layers and tweak only those, in isolation.Īlso, fwiw, I think the “jerkiness” actually plays into the physicality of the colossus and the skeletons - watching it again, it seems weird that creatures of bone or metal would move smoothly. Despite turning all of these features off, there is still some motion smoothing going on. And it has the unfortunate side effect of motion smoothing the human actors (particularly in that boat escape from the Colossus), which gives the film a cheap video-like sheen. Im a bit of purist and do not like motion smoothing/frame interpolation when watching films. With motion smoothing, the monsters look almost cartoonish, or like video game animations. That being said, I think this attempt doesn’t quite work. A great example of this is Metropolis, which I personally find a joy to watch in the “enhanced” version - though in that case, that was an actual restoration of damage, not just adding extra sauce on top.īut overall, I think it’s normal for artists to play around and riff on the work of older artists.

Rendering at higher resolution and higher frame rates requires greater performance, and will therefore be more sensitive to dips in performance, leading to more cases where Motion Smoothing may be needed. Movies have judder which is removed by motion interpolation (so people argue that film looks like TV soap operas.). Motion Smoothing is likely to be an important feature for those using Valve’s upcoming Index headset which has a higher resolution than the original Vive, and supports 90Hz, 120Hz, and 144Hz refresh rates. Motion Smoothing is only available on systems running Windows 10, and only works with the Vive, Vive Pro, and other native OpenVR headsets as other headsets (like the Rift and Windows VR) have their own approach to dealing with dropped frames. It does so by looking at the last two frames, estimating what the next frame should look like, then sending the synthesized frame to the display instead of an entirely new frame. ASW / Motion Smoothing Timewarp (at current) and Reprojection only account for rotational tracking. Motion Smoothing in SteamVR synthesizes entirely new frames to use in the place of dropped frames. Valve also says that while the newer Radeon VII is technically supported, there’s a bug in its graphics driver which can cause Motion Smoothing to stop working, that hasn’t offered a timeline for when this might be fixed.
